Little Black Wheels

Another wonderful interview over at driftsurfing.com of Filmmaker Mick Waters.
I love his vibe again. These guys are mindblowing. Simply enjoying life!

"‘Little Black Wheels’ was an afterthought. My family and I traveled across Australia for five months in 2007. There were never any intentions to make a film as such, we just went on a road trip. Of course, I took my camera gear, and what you see in the movie is the result of our journey and the people we met. It wasn’t until months into our trip that I imagined there might be a film amongst it all. The final seeds were sewn when I finally had the chance to view all the footage properly when we got home. There isn’t much room for editing and the like when you’re traveling in a campervan with your pregnant wife, two-year-old daughter, dog and yourself."

"There are also some not so beautiful aspects in the world as well, but most of that is due to humans blowing it. I figure the trick is to find and concentrate on the positives and stay stoked on life and how great we have things today. I see beauty in everyday life and the little things that make it beautiful, like a smile or cuddle from my kids, an early morning sunrise, surfing good barrels, peacocks in the backyard, a beer or seven with friends and family, listening to vinyl records or a nice meal with my wife. Being aware of how good we have it compared to others and acknowledging that makes it easier to find beauty."

Some snowboarding

At the beginning of this week some friends and I were shredding the "Aips-Playground". My homie Aips built his own little snowpark at his backyard. Check out some more pictures on myFlickr. The action shots are blurred as hell due to the slow 1/160sec x-sync time of the GH-1... but whatever! This was also fun as hell ;) But there are more pics coming soon because Aips and I did more shots on his Nikon D1X. I just wanted to try out the GH-1 with the wider lens and his flash-system. So watch out for more shots (including railshots :))!!!

Hooooly shit!!! I'm totally speechless after watching this movie! It's amaaaaazing! I knew it was supposed to be a good one, but this scared the shit out of me (in a positive way)! By far this was the most technical, stylish and most progressive surf movie I've seen in my life!!! Please watch it and be amazed by what's possible on a surfboard nowadays. Combine the action with really nice cinematography, slick editing, a concept and finest electronic music and BOOOM!!! You've just got a masterpiece!!! I know that I'm gonna watch this over and over again!!! I love almost everything in this movie! Even the choosen typography was spot on! Creative use of light, type and color at the intro montage. Great analog feeling!
I know that some of my so called "snowboarding friends" who never liked surfmovies much, because they found them boring to watch, will love this movie too :)
Kai Neville really did an amazing job! Thank you! I'm totally inspired and motivated!!!

If I would have to pic out some cons the only thing it was missing were some water cinematography. And sometimes the color correction and some post tilt-shift work was kind of weird, but I think that's just how Kai Neville wanted the movie to look like... so at the end it doesn't bother me at all actually :) Love it!!!

Interviews with Kai Neville here, here and here.
What or who do you look to for creative inspiration? I know surfing in the past hasn't been the most progressive of genres, but is there a person or a magazine or cinematographer that makes you reexamine how you do your job?
The audience for sure craves more today and I have been tapping into a few genres and music videos for ideas, taking what I like and trying to apply that technique to a surf film. Also, I draw ideas from design and culture magazines like Wonderland, Wallpaper, Dazed, etc. This style has created a really clean and minimal look to the project. More emphasis on the subject rather than applying wild motion graphics and titles across the screen. I love the look in most features and fashion ads of using small text with extravagant imagery apposed to covering the page with hideous graphics.
